Why are the Mercy Ravens MC women referred to as bunnies?

A reader recently asked me why I refer to the MC women as bunnies. Here is her question and my answer.
Just finished reading the first three books in the Mercy Ravens MC series and I love them. They are so different from other MC romances. I want to ask why you refer to the MC women as bunnies? I’ve read other MC novels where the crews are not so nice. The men call the women comfort girls, biker sluts, and whores. But you gave them a “cute” name. Why? I get you’re light on the MC, but the women are essentially prostitutes and not exactly innocent.
For the reader who asked this question, fair warning, you may not like my response based on how I interpreted your question.
First, I wrote MC romance after reading several of the same MC novels you mentioned. The books were atrociously degrading toward women represented by motorcycle clubs. This is not an accurate representation of most MCs. I’m from Wisconsin where biker culture runs deep. Not every biker club has a Hell’s Angels’ persona, in fact, the overwhelming majority are nothing near the described.
Second, most MCs are extremely protective of the women in their folds, and not in the territorial, controlling way. They love their women, whether or not a member claims them. MC life is a brotherhood, but more than that, it’s a family. This extends to the women who enter the club.
Third, your comment referring to the bunnies as “essentially prostitutes” is inappropriate for several reasons. Your remark comes across as these women somehow deserve derogatory titles. Let me start by saying sex workers do not deserve these atrocious names: they are sex workers. Period. Let’s stop shaming people who choose this line of work.
As for the bunnies. They are not sex workers. These are women who chose to sleep with the MC members because they enjoy having sex with the men. This does not make them “sluts” or “whores.” To say MC women/the bunnies are whores, is a misogynist way of thinking, that a woman is dirty because she has a sexual appetite while the males somehow get a free pass to stick their dicks in whoever. News flash: women can like sex with multiple people and it doesn’t mean they’re trash.
A prostitute would suggest these women are paid to trade their bodies for some sort of payment. The bunnies are not paid for sex. They chose if they want to have sex or not with any of the crew, nor are they forced to have sex with anyone they don’t want to. They may be given a place to sleep and funds to buy what they need, but guess what? So do the men of the club. They all work for the MC to deserve housing, food, and essentials provided by the club. The women take care of headquarters, plan meals, shop for the men, and helped where asked. Having sex with the MC men is a choice they make when they want to indulge themselves.
This brings us back to the question: why the name bunnies? MCs are notorious for using nicknames for all their members, male and female. The bikers have titles for their positions in the club and a club name. The women who are claimed are called old ladies. The ones unclaimed are also given a title that is different depending on the club. I named the unclaimed women bunnies.
Why? Because bunny is the pet name my hubby calls me. It’s a term of endearment, like honey, sweetheart, or baby. Does it have a sexual context to its meaning? Yes. Rabbits like to have sex. Doesn’t make a female rabbit a slut or whore either.
I may be MC-light, but I am pro-woman.
